The film is based on the true story of Philomena Lee, an Irish woman in her 70s of strong Catholic faith (Judi Dench), who went in search of the son she was forced to give up for adoption after she became pregnant 50 years earlier and was then forced to live in a convent. It also stars Steve Coogan, who co-wrote the script based on Martin Sixsmith’s autobiographical account and has been nominated for four ‘Oscars’ including ‘best film’ and ‘best female actress’.

Every now and then a British film comes along which just about everybody just loves. This what The Observer says: “Philomena is one of those unusual movies it’s hard to imagine anyone not enjoying. It doesn’t preach or patronise. The impulse to make Philomena may have been born out of upset. Yet it’s resolved with a compassion that trips you up scene after scene. You can stand on a soapbox and still honour the pulpit.”

And from The Telegraph: “Stephen Frears’s Philomena is both a bona fide crowd-pleaser and a drama of real intelligence.”

A life affirming film with a surprising number of laughs, and a few tears. Join us for an evening that you won’t easily forget.
