“The Nice Guys is no Casablanca, but it’s a hell of a party.” The Telegraph

We often hear the plea for films ’like the studios used to make’, with laugh-out-loud comedy and just good uncomplicated entertainment. Well here we are, The Nice Guys is self-consciously ‘old fashioned’, set in 1970s Los Angeles.

Two of the most popular stars in Hollywood, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, are at their slickest and most effective best. The Nice Guys opens when single father and licensed private eye Holland March (Gosling) is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of famous porn star Misty Mountains. As the trail leads him to track down a girl named Amelia (scene-stealing Angourie Rice), he encounters less licensed and less hands-off private eye / enforcer Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe). Essentially a ‘buddy movie’, The Nice Guys is not so old fashioned that it eschews a little bad language, sex and nudity and, of course, our two intrepid heroes find themselves deeper in the mire than they, or indeed we, expected. But go with the flow and we defy you not to end the evening with a smile on your face for the whole human race!   John Crome
