Director: Woody Allen

Cast: Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Kathy Bates, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Tom Hiddleston

Owen Wilson plays a modern-day, disillusioned American scriptwriter Gil enduring a pre-wedding trip to Paris with his gorgeous but egocentric fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) and her wealthy xenophobic parents. During a lone midnight walk while Inez goes dancing with boorish friends he is scooped up by bunch of champagne-guzzling partygoers in a vintage car and finds himself at a party where he encounters F Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda, Ernest Hemingway and Cole Porter – and falls in love with Picasso’s mistress (Marion Cotillard). It gradually dawns on him that this is the real thing – he has travelled back in time through a literary dream portal to 1920s Paris, meeting a host of other past celebs including Gertrude Stein, Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Ernest Hemingway (“Have you ever shot a charging lion?”) and Salvador Dalí (“I am Dalí! You are a rhinoceros?”).

Widely acclaimed as one of Woody Allen’s best films ever, and definitely his most commercially successful, this film is mainly funny, sometimes sad and always entertaining. Interest is added by the presence of Carla Bruni, the First Lady of France, in a cameo role.
