“A sun-drenched musical masterpiece” – The Guardian
Rockbourne Film Night offers you the treat of this delightful film to welcome you back after the summer break. La La Land is as light and frothy as the topping on the coffee that Emma Stone serves in the cafe in LA where she encounters the movie folk. Ryan Gosling (perhaps now the biggest star in Hollywood) plays jazz piano and struggles for an audience.
This romantic comedy, unusually, is adorned with music and dance. It’s true to say that Ryan Gosling is no Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, and Emma Stone, lovely as she is, can’t match Ginger Rogers or Cyd Charisse, but they both do their best, which is all brilliant writer/director Damien Chazelle asks of them – and all we the captivated audience should expect. I watched this film with a wide grin which didn’t leave my face for hours after I had said goodbye to the bright colours and optimism of La La Land.
It won no fewer than 6 Oscars and 8 BAFTAs. And, of course, took squillions at the box office. But you can see it here for the usual £6. Treat yourselves – and ‘be happy’. John Crome
