“Nick Hornby adapts Colm Tóibín’s lovely novel of an Irish immigrant finding love in New York, and the result will send shivers down your spine.” Daily Telegraph

We are delighted to bring this gentle, warm hearted and memorable film to Rockbourne, because we are sure that you are going to love it. In fact it is my favourite film of the year. Brooklyn was nominated for multiple awards including that of ‘best actress’ for the luminous Saoirse Ronan, surely the best screen actress of her age? Unusually, it received a standing ovation when premiered at the Sundance Festival.
Julie Walters, getting away from sitcoms, is the stern but warm landlady of the boarding house in Brooklyn, New York where Eilis (Ronan) finds herself, after emigrating from 1950s poverty in Ireland. There she works hard, helped by the kindness of others, falls in love with Tony an Italian-American plumber (the excellent Emory Cohen), marries and graduates. She is compelled to return to her former life in Ireland when her sister dies. Not telling of her marriage, back home she is wooed by a charming and sympathetic local lad (Domhnall Gleeson). Eilis is caught between two countries….will she leave the warmth, familiarity and security of the life she now leads in Ireland, to return to the hardships of immigration and to her first love, the blameless Tony?
Her answer will have you all cheering through the tears! John Crome.
